The Bolton Arms, Downholme

After working at The Bolton Arms in Downholme, since I was 13, I was asked to create a website to advertise opening times, menus, rooms and added information about the local area.

The Ask

Screenshots from 2015 re-design, website has been offline since June 2026 due to new ownership.

Steve and Nic from The Bolton Arms in Downholme wanted a simple website, so they could easily share menus with customers, especially when they are pre-ordering group Christmas meals and so that they could see the rooms. I also included information about the local area to boost SEO presence

Online Presence

At the time, we had no social media presence or online booking availability, and the owners wanted to appear in search results for the pub name, to avoid confusion with other pubs in the areas with the same name.

Photography

Initially, I took all the photos of the bar, restaurant, B&B rooms and exterior with my SLR camera to ensure we had quality photos. These were later updated with up-to-date photos, after work had been done to freshen up the pub.

The Approach

Social First

Tailored media queries were incorporated to adjust styling and layout based on the device characteristics, ensuring an optimal viewing experience.

Responsive Brand

The design team adopted a mobile-first approach, ensuring that the website's layout and functionality were optimized for smaller screens before being scaled up for larger devices.

Digital & Physical Packaging

A fluid grid system was implemented to create a flexible and proportionate layout that adjusts seamlessly to different screen sizes, maintaining visual consistency across devices.
